We are excited to introduce our new webinar series, Tropical Islands Partnering on Solutions (TIPS) for Marine Debris. This series, featuring experts from across the country, is a crucial platform for sharing perspectives and solutions on the pressing issue of marine debris that affects tropical islands. This webinar series will be held every other month with a focus on a different marine debris related topic.
Tropical islands are some of the most incredible places on the planet, with clear blue waters and white sand beaches. Despite their beauty, marine debris threatens these places as much as other shorelines around the world. Derelict fishing gear, abandoned and derelict vessels, and consumer plastics are a part of the regular landscape on otherwise beautiful beaches. Tropical Island communities face a different set of challenges, such as limited disposal options and increased storm activity. Similar challenges exist in the Pacific as well as the Caribbean.
This webinar series will bring together tropical island communities from across the world ocean to discuss different marine debris-related topics, such as disposal, storm impacts and recovery, the impacts of tourism, and more! The series will highlight work from federal, state, and local governments, nongovernmental organizations, universities, and industry in hopes that this shared knowledge will help communities better address the marine debris problem.
We welcome attendance from anyone interested in marine debris issues, particularly local, state, and federal agencies, tribes, nongovernmental organizations, and other organizations engaged in the issue on islands. Our first webinar, Initiating Island Connections, will kick off with a series of presentations from the NOAA Marine Debris Program’s Caribbean, Florida, and Pacific Islands Regional Coordinators on regional action planning, cross-regional collaboration, and differences and similarities between our island regions.
