The NOAA Marine Debris Program is proud to present our 2020 Accomplishments Report. Once a year, we like to take a moment to reflect on our Program’s mission to investigate and prevent the adverse impacts of marine debris, and to recognize the achievements made by our team and our partners. This year presented a set of unique challenges, but despite these disruptions, we adapted to our ever-changing circumstances and accomplished a great deal.
Though our work is expanding, we are still committed to tackling marine debris across our ten regions in the United States and territories. We continue to work to develop local marine debris action plans, emergency response guides, and to implement projects across the country. We are dedicated to advancing these collaborative efforts together with our many hard-working and dedicated partners—community-based organizations, academia, industry, tribes, and government agencies.
The report not only highlights some of our major achievements over the past year, but also acknowledges the conclusion of our 2016-2020 Strategic Plan. During the last five years, we advanced our mission through unique collaborations, creative approaches, and by growing national and international attention on the pervasive global problem of marine debris. These strides would not be possible without our dedicated partners in communities across the country and beyond - thank you! The report underscores the power of collective action and how we can—together—achieve a global ocean and its coasts free from the impacts of marine debris.
