The 2018 hurricane and typhoon seasons inflicted severe damage to communities and coastal resources across North Carolina, South Carolina, Florida, and the Commonwealth of the Northern Mariana Islands. Hurricanes Florence and Michael, and Typhoon Yutu left a swath of destruction and large amounts of debris in the coastal zones of the affected states and territory. This debris poses hazards to navigation, commercial fishing grounds, and sensitive ecosystems.
With financial support from the NOAA Marine Debris Program, the National Fish and Wildlife Foundation (NFWF) is seeking applications for $10 million in grants to remove damaging marine debris from impacted coastal areas of communities. The program will primarily fund projects that will assess, remove, and dispose of marine debris in communities within North Carolina, South Carolina, Florida, and the Commonwealth of the Northern Mariana Islands.
Full proposals are due on Wednesday, January 15, 2020 11:59 PM ET. Informational webinars for potential applicants will be held by NFWF in early December. The webinar for applicants from coastal communities impacted by Hurricanes Florence and Michael will be held by NFWF on Thursday, December 5th, 2019 at 1:00-2:00 p.m. EST. The webinar for applicants from coastal communities impacted by Typhoon Yutu will be held by NFWF on Thursday, December 5th, 2019 at 6:30-7:30 p.m. EST, which is Friday, December 6th, 2019 at 9:30-10:30 a.m. ChST.
