Celebrate Dad Debris-Free!

What do dad jokes and marine debris have in common? We’re hoping not to see too much of either this Father’s Day! But, while we might have to deal with a few dad jokes, we shouldn’t have to deal with marine debris. So let’s work to celebrate Dad without contributing to this extremely preventable problem.

Dads often know best. Unfortunately, this parent could mistakenly feed their chick marine debris. While celebrating this Father’s Day, take a moment to remember the impacts of marine debris and make sure you’re not contributing to the problem! (Photo Credit: NOAA)

While you’re celebrating the father in your life, make sure you’re keeping our environment in mind too. Staying at home to enjoy the backyard and a barbecue? Skip the disposable utensils, cups, and plates and use the real stuff. Make sure any trash you do produce gets disposed of properly and recycled if possible. Decorating for the celebration? Make sure any balloons are tied down tight or use an alternative decoration that can be recycled or used again. Taking Dad out to dinner? Consider asking your server to deliver your drink without a disposable plastic straw. There are lots of little things we can do on special occasions and every day to help fight marine debris! Fun Fact: Did you know that 26 barbecue grills were found during the 2014 International Coastal Cleanup? We’d like to think we don’t have to say this, but just in case—after you’re done grilling for Father’s Day, don’t throw your barbecue where it doesn’t belong.
