We are pleased to announce with the BoatUS Foundation, a call for applications under the Abandoned and Derelict Vessel Removal Grant Program. With funding from the NOAA Marine Debris Program provided by the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law, the BoatUS Foundation will award up to $7.5 million in grants to remove abandoned and derelict vessels across coastal and marine areas of the United States.
Abandoned and derelict vessels are vessels that are no longer taken care of and pose a threat to people and the environment. They can be a danger to navigation, damage ecosystems, and impact the recreational value of the surrounding area. Some vessels may contain fuel and hazardous materials, which could leak into the surrounding water. Removing and disposing of abandoned and derelict vessels requires significant financial and technical resources, and the laws around these vessels differ across states and territories. These complications can make abandoned and derelict vessels a difficult problem to address.
Through a streamlined application process, this competition aims to lower the administrative burden on applicants and allow more organizations to access funds for vessel removal. Priority will be given to projects that include input from and benefit underserved, low-income, or tribal communities; demonstrate strong community support; benefit marine animals and their habitats, local coastal communities, or local economies; and include local outreach and education activities directed toward the boating community and general public to prevent abandoned and derelict vessels. Projects throughout the coastal United States, Great Lakes, United States territories, and Freely Associated States are eligible for consideration.
