The NOAA Marine Debris Program (MDP) is pleased to share the Gulf of Maine Marine Debris Action Plan. This document is the result of a collaborative effort between the NOAA Marine Debris Program and partners in Canada, Maine, Massachusetts, and New Hampshire, and represents a partner-led effort to guide marine debris actions in the Gulf of Maine for the next five years.

Throughout the Gulf of Maine, numerous organizations work to address marine debris through education, prevention, removal, and research efforts. Since 2015, representatives from over 80 organizations across three states and two Canadian provinces, including local, state, and federal governments, nonprofits, industry, and academic institutions, have come together to develop the Gulf of Maine Marine Debris Action Plan.

The purpose of this Action Plan is to improve coordination and galvanize new efforts to address marine debris throughout the Gulf of Maine.

The Action Plan has four Working Groups, further defined by objectives, strategies, and specific actions:

  • Consumer Debris
  • Derelict Fishing Gear
  • Microplastics
  • Research, Information, and Risk Assessment for Wildlife and Habitat.

The MDP solicited partner input on the Action Plan through three workshops and several rounds of review and comment. Participants will complete a mid-plan assessment in 2022, detailing Action Plan progress.

The MDP greatly appreciates this collaborative effort. For more information, please contact Demi Fox (demi.fox@noaa.gov).

Good work!

I have a question. I’ve seen no discussion on or about the solar warming effect of the 5 major trash patches in the scope of ocean warming. In my mind they would have to act as massive heat sinks. Something to ponder!
