Thank you for your question! Trash booms and other catchment systems are in use around the world on waterways, often in urban areas. The boom featured in this story required fences and extra strength in order to deal with waters that occasionally flood the Goat Canyon Basin in the Tijuana River National Estuarine Research Reserve.
